Boosting energy efficiency through digitalisation: new e-learning platform launched

The Centre of Expertise for Energy Efficiency through Digitalisation KEDi) at the German Energy Agency (dena) has launched a new e-learning platform focused on digital solutions in the buildings sector. The first modules concentrate on optimising heating systems in large multi-family residential buildings.

Optimising heating systems can reduce energy costs by 10 to 20 per cent – without any major investments. These quick wins not only cut costs but also significantly lower carbon emissions. The platform’s initial five online learning modules, launched as part of a pilot phase, show how these savings can be achieved through improving efficiency.

The course tackles real-world questions such as: What are the key optimisation points for existing heating systems? How do you accurately calculate heating load? What is hydraulic balancing and why is it important? What should be considered in heating system control and wiring? How are pressure, flow rate, and pump capacity connected? Digital monitoring solutions are also presented.

The course runs until 13 July and includes approximately 24 hours of study. Each module features a dedicated live expert Q&A session. Completion can be recognised as further training for members of the national list of energy efficiency experts.

Learn anytime, anywhere – at your own pace

The free modules are designed for plumbing, heating, and air conditioning professionals of all levels of training, electricians, energy consultants, and representatives from the housing industry. The content is available on all major devices and can be completed anytime, anywhere, and at your own pace. Evaluation of the pilot is to be completed by the end of July 2025 and the e-learning platform is then expected to enter into full operation. Looking ahead, KEDi plans to expand its offerings and support services in partnership with industry stakeholders – helping to drive energy efficiency in buildings through digital innovation.

KEDi is committed to building practical expertise among trades and professionals directly involved in digitalisation. Through its network, it brings together specialist educational partners who work together to develop new learning modules, improve training formats, and strengthen the transfer of theory into real-world practice. The goal is to make digital solutions visible, promote stakeholder exchange, support market upskilling, and help professionals navigate relevant policy frameworks.

Trades and crafts to collaborate more closely on heat pump integration

A new partnership is also in the works between KEDi and EEBus Initiative e.V. as part of the ministry-funded project ‘DigiWEMS’ (Digital Integration of Heat Pumps into Building Energy Management Systems). The project focuses on improving collaboration between trades and crafts in the installation and commissioning of heat pumps. The Living Lab in Cologne, operated by EEBus, will serve as a practical testing ground. Insights from DigiWEMS will be directly incorporated into to KEDi’s future content and support offerings.
